What is fate?

Some people believe that fate controls who walks into your life. My friend just told me that he believes that there is no fate. Life is how you build it and meeting someone is never a fate but coincidence. Because the world is so small that we meet each other coincidently. He gave me an example: He send 1 millions of balls around a big box and it will hit each balls at least more than a hundred times because no matter what, the world is so small that we will meet each other coincidently. Hence, fate is never a word.
